Cranial Osteopathy for Babies and Children

Cranial Osteopathy for babies and children is a gentle and non-invasive technique whereby the practitioner aids the body’s natural self-correcting mechanism to relieve trauma which may have occurred during birth.

The movement of the baby through the cervix in labour obliges the head to move in several specific directions whilst undergoing the powerful pressure of the contractions, this naturally causes some overlapping of the skull and compression. Some compressions may be relieved spontaneously after birth as the baby cries or suckles; however, others may require attention of a qualified cranial osteopath.

These compressions can cause the baby:

  • headaches
  • discomfort whilst lying on her/his back
  • a poor sucking reflex
  • excess mucus production

Babies born by caesarean section can also present some compression problems, as the skull has not undergone the ‘moulding’ effect of the birth canal.

The secondary effects of these unresolved compressions are wide ranging:

  • Poor moving diaphragm leading to digestive dosorders
  • Poor sleep patterns
  • Irritability
  • Restlessness
  • Poor feeding

All these symptoms may be helped with cranial osteopathy.

When osteopaths examine babies, areas of tension are often found in the spine or head, which are indications that the baby is uncomfortable. A baby cannot complain of backache or headache and will typically express this through crying or being unsettled or irritable.

In a recent study into the effects of Cranial Osteopathic treatment on babies, some parents perceived the following changed in their children’s behavior: reduced colicky crying, improved sleep, less unsettled irritable behavior and increased quiet happy spells.

The longer a problem is left, the more complex the body’s adaption becomes and consequently, the more difficult it is to return the body to a state of well-being. Several of the conditions we develop in adulthood can be traced back to birth trauma that had been left uncorrected.
