What is Osteopathy?
The science of Osteopathy was discovered in 1874 by Dr Andrew Taylor Still, a medical physician searching for a more effective system of healing. He taught that the structure of the body and the way that it functions are inseparably linked, that each person contains within themselves the resources necessary for health, and that body, mind and spirit operate as a unified whole which is continually working to heal itself.
Osteopathy provides skilled diagnosis and treatment concerning primarily, but not only, the structure and function of the neuro-musculo-skeletal system i.e. the joints, muscles, ligaments, membranous, and facial tissues, and the central peripheral nervous system.
At the Bridge Centre, Osteopathic structural and cranial approaches are both employed to bring the body back to full functional health. Techniques that are used include: manipulation, joint articulation, gentle soft tissue and cranial osteopathy techniques.
‘Its brilliant! I cannot believe it really because I was sceptical about cranial osteopathy until this experience. I am now walking comfortably and sleeping comfortably after suffering for some time. I can happily recommend it’ Michael
Visiting an Osteopath
On your first visit to your Osteopath, a detailed history will be taken (including general medical checks). You will usually be asked to remove some clothing so that a detailed functional and structural assessment can be made.
This will include a standing assessment and simple mobility testing to see how your whole body relates mechanically to your complaint. The Osteopath is then likely to focus the examination in the region which appears to be causing the problem. Clinical examination such as neurological and cardiovascular testing may be carried out.

While the focus of the therapy is to uncover and treat the source of the problem, symptom relief is also achieved. The length of time and number of sessions needed is extremely variable and is dependent upon a number of factors, for example the presence of a complex layer of injury and trauma that may mask the original cause of the problem, the degree of reaction from the body’s defense mechanisms, and the quality of the patients inherent vitality and health.
