What happens when you Stop Smoking

We all know that stopping smoking is good for our health, and the latest research shows that hypnotherapy is the most effective way to quit  (See The New Scientist article), but have you ever wondered what happens to you body once you stop?

Just 20 minutes after stopping your heart rate drops to that of a normal person and blood pressure reduces too. 12 hours later and the carbon monoxide levels in your blood stream return to normal, that’s a lot of positive change in a very short space of time!

Day 1 to 3 are the most significant as far as staying stopped goes as this is where; if you are pre disposed to the addictive properties of nicotine (in my experience about 25% of smokers are, 75% is habit and emotion related), the withdrawal time peaks at day two and begins to decline by day 3. By the end of day 3 nicotine is out of your system and after this, any ‘cravings’ that may be experienced will be from old habits and emotional links (which is why hypnotherapy is so effective).

After just 2 weeks, your heart attack risk begins to drop and after a month you will begin to feel the benefits by your breathing becoming easier and coughing has generally stopped by now or shortly afterwards.

One year on and you have halved your risk of coronary heart disease!

Five years on and your risk of stroke has reduced to that of a non- smokers.

Ten years after your quit date lung cancer risk is halved and other smoking related cancers are also greatly reduced.

Fifteen years later and it’s as if you never started, showing what damage smoking does to your body long term, but also, just how amazing your body is at repairing itself when you give it the chance it needs.
