Women's Health Physiotherapy

Women's Health Physiotherapy is the therapeutic treatment of all disorders/lack of optimum functioning of the pelvis, musculo-skeletal system and the pelvic floor that are specific to women.

Our Women's Health Physiotherapist is called Emily Sturt and she can treat women all all stages of life with a wide range of presenting problems/concerns.

Gynaecological Physiotherapy involves treating women at any stage of life who could be experiencing a range of problems. These include urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, faecal incontinence, constipation, pelvic floor weakness, diastasis recti, back pain, post hysterectomy/surgical weakness/complications, vulvodynia, vaginissimus and sexual dysfunction.

Obstetric Physiotherapy involves treating women in the pre and post natal period. During any stage of pregnancy a woman can experience all manner of musculoskeletal (joint/muscle/ligament/tendon/nerve) pain associated with the physical and physiological changes experienced at this time. Typical problems during pregnancy that can be addressed and treated with physiotherapy include Pelvic Girdle Pain/PGP (formerly known as SPD), back pain, sciatica and leg pain, ring ligament pain, rib flare pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, diastasis recti (seperating of tummy muscles) and difficulties walking/exercising.

Typical problems post-natally include back and joint pain, poor abdominal muscle strength and stability, shoulder and wrist problems from feeding/carrying positions, pelvic instability, post C-section weekness/pain, 3rd and 4th dgree perineal tears, pelvic organ prolapse, diastasis recti, hernia, pelvic floor weakness, incontinence, reduced fitness, wellbeing and mood and last but by no means least post-natal depression.

Treatment for any of the above will begin with a through consultation and assessment by our Physiotherapist. Then depending on her conclusions she has a variety of treatment options at her disposal. These include joint mobilisations, deep muscle trigger point release, stretching, acupressure, acupuncture, strength and stability training, Pilates exercises, posture correction, stimulation and bio-feedback, dilators, support belts, pelvic floor strength training, nutritional advice and relaxation techniques.

We understand that people’s lives are busy and complex and that things happen which are out of your control. Wherever possible though we require 24-hour's notice of a cancelled appointment. If 24-hour's notice is not given our Practitioners reserve the right to charge you for the full cost of the missed appointment. This is at the discretion of the individual Practitioners.
