There are many detox diets and regimes but which is the best and do we need to do them?

There is always some new mega detox diet where you stand on one leg and drizzle rainwater down your throat for a week, or some new superfood filled with amazing amounts of antioxidants that is this seasons must have food group. It can be confusing, so lets simplify our thinking. The very act of living produces waste products in our bodies from the breakdown of cells as they wear out and our bodies contain the residues left over from what we eat or nasties like additives and antibiotics and growth hormones that have been added. We are also subjected to toxins all around us in our world such as chemicals, cleaning products and insecticides to name but a few. Our body has a wide variety of processes for helping us eliminate these toxins. We eliminate waste through our digestive tract, skin, lungs, lymphatic system, liver and kidneys. For example we sweat out certain toxins, breath out certain toxins and get rid of toxins through our urine and bowel movements. All of these processes are important and need to function healthily to naturally detoxify our bodies. So easily achievable steps to aid our detoxification processes are;

  1. Regular exercise (even walking) moves and clears our lymphatics and improves organ function (Lungs, Liver and Kidneys)
  2. Drinking enough fluids (2 Litres on average, more if you are very active). This will maintain healthy bowel and Kidney function and eliminate waste. Don't forget when you feel thirsty you are already dehydrated!
  3. Avoid putting more toxins into your body! Avoid stimulants such as tea and coffee, alcohol, recreational drugs.
  4. Ideally avoid non organic foods which have higher pesticide levels or buy foods sourced local to where you live and in season from local producers or at farmers markets
  5. Stop eating processed foods which are poor nutritionally and high in sugars, fats, salt, colouring and preservatives. Just buy some basic ingredients and make something!There is abundant evidence suggesting that eating whole fruits, fresh vegetables and whole grains, rich in networks of antioxidants and associated molecules, provides the best protection against many diseases and the processes of ageing.

So eat well, particularly rainbow colours of fruit and vegetables, drink enough and take regular exercise and you will be healthy and detox naturally which is not rocket science is it?
