Eat, Drink and Stay Healthy

Christmas is a time of celebration when we come together, share gifts and eat rich, delicious food, washed down with copious amounts of alcohol amongst an array of other activities!
For some this presents a challenge of how to enjoy the festivities without breaking their diet or healthy eating plan. Here are some tips on how to do it:
- Sip a glass of water in between sips of wine at dinner; this will reduce the amount of alcohol consumed. Avoid creamy or sweet drinks, which can significantly impact on blood sugar levels. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. This will reduce the desire to overeat too.
- Avoid the pastry selection at buffets and instead choose nuts, houmus or vegetable dips with crudités, smoked salmon paté, roasted chicken legs (without the skin), or stuffed olives. Take homemade snacks with you to share, with your hostess’s permission of course!
- Make sure you have a good breakfast so you are less likely to overeat during the day.
- Do not leave chocolates and nibbles out all day, thus removing temptation. Small bowls of natural nuts make a good alternative. Toast a mixture drizzled in tamari sauce in the oven for 5 minutes. Quick, easy & delicious!
- Don’t overload your plate – keep the portion sizes sensible and ensure half the plate is made up of vegetables. Avoid bread sauce, and stuffing; choose cranberry sauce and chestnuts. They are both very Christmassy and provide an air of decadence!
- When it comes to pudding, perhaps give Christmas pudding a miss and have a scoop of ice cream or cheese with a couple of biscuits
- Get some exercise – a brisk walk with friends and family can stimulate your metabolism and be fun as well.
- Most importantly of all enjoy yourself. It is, after all, only once a year!
Happy Christmas Everyone!
