Young Carers Awareness Day 2019

31st January 2019 12:21 PM

Author: Richard Smith

Did you you know that 1 in 5 Secondary School aged children care for a family member? To mark Young Carers Awareness Day on 31st January 2019, The Carers Trust are working to raise awareness of the effects that this responsibility can have on the mental health of those young people and to improve the availability of support for them.

You may know a young person in this situation; you may come into contact with them as part of your work, in organisations that you or your family belong to such as sports clubs, or even in your social life. Like many people who care for others, the pressure is not always obvious to those outside of the family. Perhaps there are opportunities for you to help someone in this situation? A chance to talk, being an emergency contact, offering some much needed time off, putting them in touch with organisations who can offer specialist help and advice or just being there for them if things get too much?

We are fortunate in the East Midlands, that there are several local organisations who can offer help and support:
