Acupuncture for Fertility

For many couples the fertility journey is far from easy. It is estimated that around 1 in 7 couples may have difficulty conceiving which amounts to approximately 3.5 million people in the UK (NHS, 2018).

Acupuncture is becoming a popular choice for couples who want additional support on their fertility journey, whether they are trying naturally to conceive, or seeking conventional medical support in the form of medication, IUI, IVF or ICSI.

Because of the increase in those seeking assistance with fertility there has been an increase in the amount of research carried out to determine why it may help. Further information relating to the latest research supporting acupuncture for male and female fertility can be found through the British Acupuncture Council website at www.acupuncture.org.uk

What is Acupuncture for Fertility?

Acupuncture for fertility is simply supporting a patient through the insertion of fine needles along with the use of a Chinese herb known as Moxa, to specific acupuncture points to boost wellbeing.

Please note that the needles are not inserted into the genital area, but into specific areas that include legs, feet, abdomen and back. Your practitioner will discuss this with you to ensure you are comfortable with the area of the body being treated.

If you are trying to conceive naturally, then the treatments are fully tailored to your individual diagnosis. However, this changes when you are undergoing western fertility support such as IUI or IVF. The acupuncture treatments then support what the medical interventions are trying to achieve and to minimize any side effects that you may encounter.

Benefits of Acupuncture for Fertility

During your fertility journey the physical and emotional stresses can be immense for both of you. As well as the physical benefits, which may vary for each patient, our dedicated Acupuncturists offer emotional support for both partners. This support can continue through every stage of the fertility journey and be just as valuable if there are any setbacks along the way.

Can I continue Acupuncture during my pregnancy?

Research has shown that acupuncture by a qualified practitioner is safe, and can treat a number of pregnancy related health conditions without the use of drugs throughout your pregnancy, during labour and into early motherhood (Betts, 2006).

Does it Hurt?

Insertion of the needle does not cause pain although you may experience a slight twinge or ache when the needle is rotated to meet the direction of the Qi. If you do not like the feeling please do speak with your Practitioner and they will remove the needle. We strongly advise all clients never to try to remove the needle yourself.

Testimonial

My husband and I had been trying for a baby for three years and were on the waiting list for IUI treatment when a friend asked if we had considered acupuncture and told us about The Bridge Centre for Natural Health. Having a phobia of needles didn't help, but on the first appointment acupuncture was fully explained and the worry of needles was quickly put to one side. The centre itself has a very quiet and relaxing atmosphere and all the staff are extremely friendly. The acupuncture was a complete success, and we now have an adorable 5 month old baby boy to show for it.
