Vertigo

Anyone whose experienced Vertigo can tell you the extreme discomfort it brings, and for those who suffer severe or reoccurring bouts it can affect life as a whole.

Vertigo isn’t an illness as such, it’s an imbalance, a symptom of something else happening in the body. Causes can include migraine, raised temperature, joint restriction, muscle strain, stress or blood pressure issues.  Another cause could be an inner ear problem such as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (also known as BPPV which is caused by dislodged calcium crystals settling in the ear canal) or Labyrinthitis (an infection in the inner ear).

If your GP has ruled out illness or infection – then you might benefit from visiting an Osteopath or Acupuncturist.

If it’s more of a musculoskeletal issue – a trapped nerve, restricted joint or strained muscle – then Osteopaths can address the problem using massage and manipulation to help bring relief.

Some Osteopaths may also incorporate the Epley Manoeuvre* for those suffering from BPPV.

These treatments are ‘hands on’ and may result in additional discomfort initially, but as muscles relax and joints release, symptoms should improve.

Acupuncture could also offer support in a less ‘hands on’ way. Acupuncture is thought to help restore balance in the body, reducing stresses and strains. Your Acupuncturist may also be able to suggest Acupressure points to use at home to help with any reoccurring symptoms.

As with most issues multiple treatments may be needed before the desired results are achieved – your Practitioner will work with you, advising on the frequency of visits depending on how you are progressing.

Once symptoms have subsided your Practitioner may advise lifestyle changes to help you prevent further issues – perhaps some gentle Pilates, Reflexology or a Massage to help keep muscles supple and relaxed.

If it’s an emotional concern that’s causing stress and worry, then maybe a chat with a Talk Therapist will help you readdress and work through the issue.

For more information on any of the treatments mentioned call the Bridge Team on 01332 521 270 or complete the contact form – a FREE consultation is available with our Acupuncturists or Talk Therapists.

* The Epiley Manoeuvre is a series of considered movements of the head, designed to encourage displaced calcium crystals out of the ear canal, it can be performed alone or with help.
