Blue Monday 2025

Monday 20th January 2025 is BLUE MONDAY, allegedly the most depressing day of the year!

Well – its grey, cold, and gloomy – after the lights and excess of Christmas, it’s all a bit of a slap in the face with reality.

So, what can we do to try and boost our mood? You could get your hair cut, book a holiday, or redecorate the lounge – but it can be simpler (and cheaper) than that, here’s a few ideas to get you started…

  • Listen to your favourite tune – it’s surprising how putting on uplifting, energy filled music and throwing shapes in the kitchen can perk up your pout.
  • Get some fresh air – it’s not always the greatest of weather to go for a wander, but if you get the chance why not take an hour, even a half hour, to walk outside in the fresh air, see the changes happening all around you – that first peek of the delicate Snow Drops cutting through the unrelenting winter earth really is a thing of wonder.
  • Get some exercise – It can feel like the last thing you want to do, especially if you’re squeezing in the gym after a long day at work, or dragging yourself out of bed extra early, but it is worth it. And you could always exercise at home, join a class with friends or simply head out for a run. So come on drag out those sweatpants and wake up those endorphins!
  • Laugh – there’s nothing better than a good old chuckle and there are so many ways to get it… Crazy cat videos on Instagram, watching that tv favourite that always gets you giggling or why not call that sibling who admittedly drives you crazy, but can make you howl like no one else.
  • Eat well – it’s easy to sit back and stuff yourself with comfort food, and admittedly a bit of dark chocolate is good for you – but maybe not that family sized milk chocolate bar followed by those filling-threatening toffees left over from Christmas. Try and restrain the urge to gorge and make healthy choices. Seasonal fruit & veg are always a good starting point and are packed full of feel good / do good properties.  For ideas on what to cook to keep you healthy and help boost your mood head over to the BBC Good Food website: https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/health/wellness/what-eat-stay-healthy-and-happy.
