Answering common questions surrounding Acupuncture for Fertility
Around 1 in 7 couples will face infertility when trying to conceive. [1]
Whilst this shows that anyone facing fertility issues isn’t alone, the reality of the situation may feel very different, especially if you’re not comfortable sharing your struggles with those around you.
There’s lots of advice out there about improving your chances of conceiving, from eating a balanced diet to taking regular exercise, introducing healthy sleep habits and trying to manage your stress levels. If you’re looking for additional support with your fertility you may be considering Acupuncture, which is why we’ve put together some answers to the most common questions we get about Acupuncture for Fertility.
How could Acupuncture help with fertility?
Research indicates that Acupuncture may be able to help with fertility in several ways [2].
Various factors (including stress) can lead to hormonal imbalances, which can adversely affect fertility. Studies have shown that Acupuncture can have a positive effect on hormone levels, including FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) as well as oestrogen and progesterone, helping to create a more balanced cycle.
Acupuncture may also assist by increasing blood flow to the reproductive organs. Improving the thickness of the endometrial lining can help improve the chance of successful embryo implantation.
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is one of the leading causes of fertility issues in females. As well as helping balance hormones levels Acupuncture may also support you with ovulation and cyst reduction.
How often should I have acupuncture for infertility?
This will vary depending on the fertility issues you’re experiencing. It’s typical for many Acupuncture clients to begin by having a few treatments close together, then they may be spaced further apart. If you’re considering Acupuncture for Fertility we recommend getting in touch and arranging a free, no obligation consultation with one of our Acupuncturists. They will be able to discuss with you what they would recommend based on your circumstances.
How long will it take to get pregnant if I'm having Acupuncture?
There are lots of factors at play when it comes to conception. Acupuncture may be able to help in lots of ways both in terms of balancing hormones and preparing the body for pregnancy, but there’s no set time frame or guarantees for how long it may take to become pregnant. We support lots of couples at the centre who are experiencing fertility issues, and love nothing more than receiving news of a new arrival, however the path is rarely the same for two people.
When should I have acupuncture in my menstrual cycle?
This is something that your Acupuncturist will discuss with you based on your circumstances. Some people may need support throughout the cycle or you may benefit from Acupuncture at specific stages throughout your cycle.
I’m having IVF, can I have Acupuncture too?
Definitely! Acupuncture is frequently used alongside IVF. Your IVF clinic may recommend Acupuncture at certain points throughout your cycle, or you can talk to one of our Acupuncturists to discuss how Acupuncture may be able to support you through your treatment, including pre and post-transfer Acupuncture.
Does Acupuncture just support female fertility?
Not at all! The British Acupuncture Council website suggests that Acupuncture may help male infertility in the following ways [3]:
- lower scrotal temperature (Siterman 2009)
- enhance local microcirculation, by increasing the diameter and blood flow velocity of peripheral arterioles (Komori 2009)
- reduce inflammation, by promoting release of vascular and immunomodulatory factors (Zijlstra 2003)
- by improving sperm maturation in the epididymis, increasing testosterone levels, and reducing liquid peroxidation of sperm (Crimmel 2001)
Can I still have Acupuncture if I am pregnant?
Yes, you can receive Acupuncture throughout pregnancy, whether this is for help supporting your pregnancy or for another issue you require Acupuncture for. As with any treatment please do tell your Practitioner if you think you are, or may be, pregnant as your treatment may need adapting.
