Moxibustion for Breech

Moxibustion is a herb burning technique, that Acupuncturists use, which may help to turn a breech baby into a head down position ready for birth. Best results are believed to be gained between 34 and 36 weeks, as after this stage there is less room for the baby to move.  However, it is still possible for some babies to turn after this point.

What is Moxibustion for Breech

The treatment involves the burning of a Chinese herb called moxa over a specific acupuncture point on the foot of the pregnant woman. This is believed to relax the uterus and encourage the baby to move into the correct position.

Moxibustion and Moxa Explained

Moxibustion is an essential part of Chinese medicine which uses Moxa, a soft woolly substance prepared from mugwort leaves (Artemista vulgaris). In Moxibustion the moxa is placed either directly on the skin or held just above it, over specific acupuncture points or meridians. The herb is lit and as it smolders slowly, a therapeutic heat permeates the skin and affects the flow of 'qi' (energy) and blood in the area being treated.

Benefits of Moxibustion for Breech

The practice of Moxibustion is perfectly safe for both the mother-to-be and the baby.  If successful may also prevent interventions such as external cephalic version (ECV), a manual attempt to turn the baby or in some cases a caesarian section.

What to expect

No needles are used for this treatment. Usually only one treatment is required at the clinic. Your Acupuncturist will perform the treatment, explaining what is being done and where the relevant points are as the procedure needs to be repeated at home every day for the following 10 days even if the baby turns sooner.  Sufficient Moxa will be provided along with full safety instructions for you to feel confident to do this.
