Osteopathy

Osteopathy provides skilled diagnosis and treatment concerning primarily, but not only, the structure and function of the neuro-musculo-skeletal system i.e. the joints, muscles, ligaments, membranous and fascial tissues, and the central and peripheral nervous system.

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathic Structural and Cranial approaches are both employed to bring the body back to full functional health. Techniques that are used include: manipulation, joint articulation, gentle soft tissue and cranial osteopathy techniques.

Osteopathic practice is a health care approach that provides a package of care that can include manual therapy, health information including dietary advice, self management advice and support, exercise therapy etc as determined by the individual needs of the patient.

Two of our Osteopaths offer Laser Therapy as part of your treatment if appropriate.

Osteopathy may support you with:

  • Low back, neck and shoulder pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Elbow and wrist strains
  • Hip and knee problems
  • Arthritis
  • Minor sports injuries

What to expect

On your first visit, a detailed history will be taken. This will include a standing assessment and simple mobility testing to see how your whole body relates mechanically to your complaint. The Osteopath is then likely to focus the examination in the region which appears to be causing the problem. Clinical examination (such as neurological and cardiovascular testing) may be carried out.

Cranial Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a gentle treatment suitable for children and babies at all stages of development.

Cranial Osteopathy techniques are safe and gentle and may help to soothe and relax your baby.

Babies skeletons are softer than an adult's, and so Osteopaths will therefore use gentler techniques such as cranial osteopathy, when treating newborn infants and children.

During an initial appointment, the Osteopath will assess your child to see what might help.

Pregnancy & Osteopathy

A woman's body changes during pregnancy. These changes include the softening of ligaments, and any increase in body weight and postural changes. This can lead to additional pressure on joints in various parts of the body, including the spine and pelvis.

Pregnancy can cause general aches and pains including joint and back pain - Osteopathy may help relieve the stresses and strains on your body during pregnancy and after birth.
