The importance of sleep cannot be underestimated, and problems sleeping can have a huge effect on your health and wellbeing both physically and emotionally.

We all have the odd night where we toss and turn unable to settle due to a bad day had or a worrying one ahead – but if you are continuingly struggling to sleep this may be a deeper issue.

If you are struggling to sleep you are certainly not alone…
‘Insomnia is difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep for long enough to feel refreshed the next morning.
It’s a common problem thought to regularly affect around one in every three people in the UK, and is particularly common in elderly people.’

There are things you can do to help improve your chances of dropping off and staying asleep including…
•    Avoiding alcohol or caffeine before bed, if possible avoid any stimulant after late afternoon.
•    Make your bedroom as calm and comfortable as possible – everyone’s concept of a relaxing environment is different but generally avoid being too hot or too cold and any loud noises or bright lights.
•    Take time away from your screens before bed – mobile, tv and computer. Allow time for your mind to wind down – perhaps read a book or try a nice warm bath.
•    Take a pen and paper to bed – no not to drawer the curtains! Should you wake up worrying in the night you can write down your concerns and tackle them with a fresh mind in the morning.
•    Practice mindfulness and meditation.

In addition to this there are several online apps that focus on sleep issues, and NHS Scotland offers a free self help guide that helps you understand and address the reasons why you are struggling to sleep.
