Blue Monday - Getting your 'Black Dog' to heel

Depression is a common mental illness which is widely recognised and yet, for those suffering, it can be isolating, debilitating and even life threatening.

Blue Monday, this year on 16th January 2017 is "the most depressing day of the year" according to web analysis of social media sites. And is it any suprprise? Christmas is over, all of the decorations are packed away, there's no excuse to eat mince pies anymore and your credit card is groaning from the overspend on food, presents and sale shopping. And to add to that your'e back at work, it's raining and you've not got a hoiday booked until July. Anyone would feel miserable!

However, depression is more than feeling 'down in the dumps'. It is a serious illness which many people suffer with in silence and don't recognise the symptoms until it's taken hold. Depression can be triggered after a trauma, a major event in your life or a loss. Or it could just come out of the blue for no apparent reason at all. The symptoms of depression are more than just low mood. You may be sleeping too little or too much, have poor appetite or be over-eating, feel tearful, numb or just have no interest in things you usually enjoy (Mind 2016).

Winston Churchill famously referred to his depression as a 'Black Dog' and luckily there are some steps you can take to get your black dog to heel:

    • Go and talk to your GP - they may be able to offer you medication, talking therapies, Mindfulness or CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) which are recommended in the treatment of depression (NICE 2016). They could ease the pressure if work is too much to cope with by signing you off and giving y0ou some time to recouperate.
    • Eat Well - eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, oily fish, nuts and seeds which are packed full of vitamins to make you feel healthier. Cut down on refined sugars, caffeine and alcohol, as alcohol is a depressent.
    • Take some regular exercise even if you don't feel like it! Get out and move your body and you will feel better as exercise releases endorphins which make you feel happier and more relaxed.
    • Look after yourself. Be kind to yourself, the feeling will pass. Do some things that you enjoy (even if you don't feel like it). There are lots of therapies available that might help. Pamper uoreld a little bit, go for a massage or some acupuncture, releases endorphins to make you feel more chilled.
    • Don't be afraid to ask for help. If you need someone to talk to the Samaritans are always on hand to offer a listening ear. You never need to be alone. Talk to your friends and family, they may know someone who has been through the same thing or they may have been through it themselves. You might be suprised!
