D is for Deep Tissue Massage

Clients tend to enquire about Deep Tissue Massage when they’re looking for someone to go to town on all their aches, pains, and niggles. But what exactly is Deep Tissue Massage, and are elbows really involved?? …Let’s find out!

There’s a common misconception that Deep Tissue Massage is similar to Swedish Massage just with a bit more oomph (meaning deeper strokes and a bit more pressure), but that’s not the case. These different massage techniques require distinct skill sets to help you work through the issues you might be experiencing.

Deep Tissue Massage involves strokes that use slow, firm pressure in order to break down muscle ‘knots’ and rigid tissue. It’s true that whilst your therapists will typically use fingertips, knuckles and hands to work those problem areas, sometimes an elbow might be required!

This process of breaking down tight muscles and tissue helps ease pain caused by tension, which in turn helps to improve motion range. This is why Deep Tissue Massage is well suited to injury rehabilitation and to assist with prolonged tension and stiffness.

Due to the nature of a Deep Tissue Massage, post-treatment you may feel like you’ve done a session at the gym, this is because your muscles have had a workout (just without any heavy weights involved!). Deep Tissue Massage does not need to be painful though so talk to your practitioner about what is comfortable and tolerable for you in order to get the results you want from the massage.
